Why Republicans lost

BOB WAUZZINSKI
Muncie

Republicans lost because they are out of touch with mainstream America and because they abandoned their own ideals. They left the idea of limited government in the dust of Iraq and when they listened, without court approval, to our conversations. They shredded the Constitution by not promoting the general welfare clause and lied to convince us war was necessary. They broke our trust.

They became the party of Wall Street and rural America, the place of "real Americans." But, the rest of us need jobs, health care, national security, a Congress that works for everyone, and, above all, justice and fairness. Republicans gave up this noble calling for an arrogant inflexible attitude.

Bush has said Jesus is his favorite philosopher. It is hard to see how Jesus would have abandoned the victims of Katrina. It is tragic that Bush ignored the centuries-old Christian Just War doctrine for what Alan Greenspan called a "war for oil." There is something pathetic about Bush offering medical savings plans when too many Americans have neither adequate income or sufficient savings. Republicans are shamefully calloused to the middle class and the poor.

All of this is not to say Democrats are now prepared to lead. To many, they failed miserably when they did not impeach Bush. President-elect Obama must take us now where we might not like to go. We must now make hard economic choices. And, these choices will require more wisdom than our collective soul now possesses.
