First Presbyterian Church began a relationship with South View Elementary School over 10 years ago through the Kids Hope program. Kids Hope matches a church with a school in order to provide mentoring to individual students. This year, the congregation chose to get more involved and began a partnership with the teachers and staff of the school. What started in October 2018 with a half dozen volunteers has exploded into over 50 who help in the classrooms, cafeteria, Star Bucks store, nurses' office, food pantry etc. One brings her therapy dog every Thursday afternoon so children can read to it. A group of three prepares teaching materials every Friday morning. Our hospitality team provided snacks for the December faculty meeting and teacher book club and a brunch for teachers and staff on the January Teachers' Work Day.
We have been welcomed with open arms by the school and thanked profusely for our efforts. In turn, we are thankful that we can encourage and support Principal Kara Miller, her teachers and staff who work so hard to make South View a beacon of light in the community.
